Today on Time Time I am bringing into FOP land a sweet friend all the way from Jamaica, a rockstar photographer, blogger, entrepreneur, healthy food advocate, cook and friend. She is the blogger behind Jessica in the Kitchen, where she shares beautiful, delicious and healthy vegetarian recipes with the world. I met Jess last year officially at the Everything Food Conference and was beyond excited when she agreed to let me pick her brain a little in honor of the first tea time!

WHEN WAS YOUR “I MADE IT” MOMENT, WHEN YOU FELT LIKE YOU WERE SUCCEEDING AT WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR BLOG?
Oh my gosh, this is kind of hard to answer haha! I think when I was finally able to quit my job as an attorney-at-law and do it full time was when I felt like I was succeeding for sure!

WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
So my day starts with meditation, then some yoga/exercise and some breakfast. I just started gardening so I tend to check out my garden, and then I make my list for the day. Sometimes It’s been made from the day before already, and I just add on or correct it, but I like to establish a calm morning before I start work. I do a lot of recipe videos, for myself and for clients, so I spend about three days a week shooting videos, two days shooting photography and cooking, and the rest I spend writing blog posts, answering emails, reaching out to brands, scheduling social media and everything in between. I try to end my day by 7 pm, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. My husband and I always have dinner together (he also loves food) and I power down for the evening.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL LIFE WITH YOUR BUSINESS? I KNOW SOMETIMES ITS HARD TO UNDERSTAND THIS LIFESTYLE. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF IN THE “NOW” AND NOT GET CAUGHT UP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.
This is so hard to do in this industry, balance work and general life. I try to keep business hours, and to only work in my office/studio. That way, when I close that door, work is done. I try to turn off my internet because it can get so distracting. I’m convinced that establishing a work life balance is a life practice. Re social media, scheduling a week ahead helps so much! I’m in quite a few Facebook blog groups, so that really helps with keeping on top of what’s new and trendy in blogging.
WHAT DO YOU PREFER SAVORY OR SWEET?
Savory! I love desserts, but I really don’t like sweet drinks (I don’t take sugar in my coffee or tea), and I would take a bowl of hot savory pasta any day over dessert.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR GO-TO MEAL?
My Chickpea Curry is definitely my go to meal. I absolutely love it, it’s so easy (30 minutes) and tastes divine! I always have the ingredients in my pantry or fridge.
GUILTY FOOD PLEASURE?
Ah – cheese! Cheese is my weakness, anything with it is definitely a go for me.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER BLOGGERS STARTING OUT THAT YOU WISH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU STARTED?
Be consistent. It sounds simple, but it’s very difficult. You’ll want to endlessly go after what’s new, and you can end up forgetting to keep doing the basics always chasing the new and always trying to keep up with the ‘rat race.’ Be consistent with that’s the core importance to your blog – post consistently, engage with readers, and keep creating great content! Nothing – not a viral post, not a new social media – nothing beats that.
