My mom was looking into residential facilities because my manic and psychotic symptoms were so disabling, chronic and unresponsive to conventional treatment that everyone around us was out of answers.

Between my multiple diagnoses of bipolar disorder, eating disorder, borderline personality and eight real suicide attempts under my belt, multiple long-term hospitalization and being so delusional that my days consisted of therapy and sleeping- I was beyond finding hope.

I looked at my life as a pathetic attempt called living and felt lost and like I was wasting the time and life of those around me.

With the help of a psychiatrist that was open to alternative ways and a holistic doctor, I have been able to use food as a way to treat my manic-depressive illness and ward off any manic or depressive episodes for over five years.

After being caught between mania and hypomania for over seven years, I still do a double take when I realize it’s been five-plus years since I’ve experienced mania or hypomania and even more important since I’ve had a psychotic episode.

While I would love to say that it has all been laughs and games, it hasn’t every single day I have to tell myself I am lucky to be here and I deserve to be here which means I owe it to my body and mind to honor them as such. The way I view it is, I am lucky enough to be here, I should do the responsible thing and show up for myself every single day.  

WHAT CHANGED?

I healed my gut and cut out processed foods.

I filled in the vitamin deficiencies I had with real foods and supplements.

I learned to eat for my mood, and learned what foods ward off anxiety and depression symptoms, and to help me with the insomnia symptoms my manic depressive illness brings.. I learned that I could either own my anxiety or let it own me, and learned a few tricks that allow me to reduce anxiety in under 3 minutes.

I learned to practice the -No Judgement Game- where I acknowledge my emotions, and set them free without judging them.

I also realized that everything happens for a reason and self awareness is key.

I know that my emotions are there for a moment and will be replaced by new ones and I can choose which ones I replace them with.

I treat them as if they were their own person and talk to them as such.
